Russian biotech is its own universe. While the Western nootropic crowd was busy debating whether L-theanine and caffeine count as a “stack,” the Soviets were synthesizing actual neuropeptides for cosmonauts and military operators. Two of those compounds — Selank and Semax — eventually leaked out into civilian use, and now they’re some of the most interesting cognitive tools you can run.
I’ve used both. I’ve cycled them. I’ve stacked them. Here’s what they actually do, the difference between them, and how to run them without wasting your money on knockoff sprays from sketchy vendors.
The Origin Story Matters
Both Selank and Semax came out of Russian research institutes in the 1980s and 1990s. Selank is a synthetic analog of tuftsin, a natural immunopeptide your body produces. Semax is a synthetic fragment of ACTH that’s been modified to lose the hormonal activity while keeping the cognitive effects.
Both got approved for clinical use in Russia and CIS countries. Both are listed in the Russian Federation’s official drug registry. Neither has been formally approved in the US or EU, which means in those markets they’re sold as “research peptides” — same as most of the peptide world.
That regulatory limbo doesn’t mean they don’t work. It means the Russians funded research the West didn’t bother with, and the West never imported the molecules because they weren’t patentable.
What Selank Does
Selank is the calmer of the two. Its primary effects:
- Anxiolytic — reduces anxiety without the sedation or cognitive blunting of benzodiazepines
- Mild cognitive enhancement — better focus and memory consolidation
- Mood stabilizing — affects serotonin and dopamine pathways without the side effect load of SSRIs
- Some immune modulation — comes from its tuftsin lineage
What Selank doesn’t do: it doesn’t make you smarter. It removes the friction. If your brain is running with the parking brake on because of background anxiety, Selank releases the brake. That’s why people with generalized anxiety, social anxiety, or stress-induced cognitive impairment respond strongly. People who are already calm and clear don’t notice much.
What Semax Does
Semax is the sharper, more stimulating compound. Its profile:
- Strong cognitive enhancement — focus, working memory, processing speed
- Neuroprotective — increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) significantly
- Mood elevating — affects dopamine and serotonin, with a more “up” feeling than Selank
- Used clinically in Russia for stroke recovery, cognitive impairment, and ADHD
Semax is what you reach for when you need to perform. It’s not subtle. The first time I ran a high dose intranasal, I was rewriting business plans at 2am with the kind of clarity I hadn’t had since my twenties. That’s the up side. The down side is it can be too stimulating for some people, particularly anyone with underlying anxiety — which is why you stack it with Selank.
The Stack — Why Together Beats Either Alone
This is the secret most people miss. Selank and Semax run as a stack are more powerful than either one alone.
The mechanism: Semax pushes cognitive output up, focus, and BDNF. Selank takes off the anxiety friction that high cognitive demand can produce. Together you get the focus of Semax without the over-stimulation, and the calm of Selank without the slight cognitive softening some users describe.
This is similar in principle to combining a stimulant with an anxiolytic, but with peptides operating on cleaner pathways and without the dependence or tolerance issues of pharmaceutical equivalents.
Real Protocols
Standard Selank protocol:
- 750-1500mcg intranasal, 2-3 times per day
- 10-14 day cycles
- 1-2 weeks off between cycles
- Best for anxiety reduction, mood stabilization, social settings
Standard Semax protocol:
- 600-1200mcg intranasal, 1-2 times per day
- 7-10 day cycles for cognitive work
- 1-2 weeks off
- Best for high-output cognitive tasks — writing, deep work, problem-solving
The combined stack I use:
- Semax 600mcg intranasal in the morning
- Selank 750mcg intranasal mid-morning
- Repeat dose of Semax 600mcg early afternoon if extending the work session
- Total cycle 7-10 days, then 2 weeks off
Intranasal is the standard delivery for both — they’re small enough peptides to cross the nasal mucosa and reach the brain efficiently. Subq injection works too but gives diminishing returns relative to the convenience of nasal sprays.
What To Expect Subjectively
Selank on day 1: Almost nothing. Subtle drop in background anxiety. Conversation feels easier. Maybe better sleep.
Selank by day 3-5: Noticeably calmer baseline. Stress that used to spike just rolls off. People around you might notice you’re handling things differently before you do.
Semax on day 1: Within 30-60 minutes, sharper focus. Words come faster. Attention locks onto whatever you’re working on. Some people get a slight “buzz” feeling.
Semax by day 3-5: Increased motivation for cognitive work. Less procrastination. Stronger desire to organize, plan, build.
The stack: Same effects but smoother. The Semax sharpness without the edginess. The Selank calm without the slight softness.
Common Mistakes
Buying cheap garbage. The intranasal peptide market is full of vendors selling underdosed or bunk product. Lab-tested sources only. If they don’t publish HPLC results, walk away.
Running them year-round. These work on cycles. Tolerance builds. Diminishing returns hit fast. 7-14 day cycles with 1-2 weeks off is the rhythm that keeps them effective.
Expecting them to fix your foundation. Selank won’t fix anxiety caused by chronic sleep deprivation, terrible diet, no exercise, and a meaningless job. Semax won’t fix cognitive impairment caused by being constantly hungover and over-trained. These are tools for people who have the basics handled.
Mixing with other heavy nootropics simultaneously. Stacking Selank/Semax with phenibut, modafinil, racetams, and three other things at once is how people end up reporting weird effects and concluding peptides don’t work. Run one stack at a time, see what each does cleanly, then layer.
Sourcing — The Real Pain Point
This is harder than sourcing standard injectable peptides because intranasal spray formulations require specific preservatives and pH balancing. Most reputable peptide vendors sell Selank and Semax as either:
- Pre-made intranasal spray bottles (most convenient, slightly less stable)
- Lyophilized powder that you reconstitute and load into your own nasal spray bottles (more stable, more work)
Russian-imported product is generally the gold standard since this is where the molecules originated and the manufacturing supply chain is more mature. US “research peptide” vendors are hit or miss — some are excellent, most are mediocre.
I’ve covered the broader contamination risk in online supplements and the same logic applies here. You can’t outsmart a bad supply chain. Vet your source.
Safety Profile
Both compounds have been studied in Russian clinical populations for decades with no serious adverse event signal at therapeutic doses. Side effects, when they occur:
- Mild nasal irritation from intranasal use (rotate nostrils, use spray with proper preservatives)
- Headaches in some Semax users, usually resolves with dose reduction or hydration
- Occasional initial tiredness with Selank (usually within first 2-3 days)
- Rare reports of dreams becoming more vivid with Semax
No hormonal effects. No bloodwork changes at standard doses. No dependence or withdrawal. No tolerance to a degree that makes them stop working with proper cycling.
The main warning: if you’re on prescription psychiatric medications, do not stack Selank or Semax without talking to a psychiatrist who actually understands peptides. Pharmaceutical interactions with anxiolytics, antidepressants, and stimulants are not well-characterized.
When To Use Which
Reach for Selank when:
- Anxiety is the bottleneck on your performance
- High-stakes social situations (negotiations, public speaking, dating)
- Recovery from a high-stress period
- Sleep is suffering from racing thoughts
Reach for Semax when:
- Deep cognitive work is required (writing, analysis, problem-solving)
- Recovery from cognitive overload or burnout
- Studying or learning new material at high volume
- Stroke or brain injury recovery (under medical supervision)
Reach for the stack when:
- You need to perform at high cognitive output without the anxiety that comes with it
- Building or running multiple businesses simultaneously
- Going through high-demand creative or business cycles
- You want the smoothest possible cognitive performance enhancement available
Bottom Line
Selank and Semax are two of the most interesting cognitive tools in the peptide universe and almost nobody outside of Russia uses them at scale. That’s our opportunity. Cycle them properly, source them correctly, stack them when you need the combined effect, and you have a cognitive arsenal that pharmaceutical alternatives can’t match for safety profile.
I don’t run them year-round. I run them when the work demands it. Big launches, content sprints, business pivots, anything where the cognitive ceiling matters. The rest of the time, I rely on sleep, training, and food to keep my baseline sharp.
These aren’t magic. They’re sharp tools. Used well, they extend what you’re capable of. Used carelessly, they’re just expensive sprays.
