Heavy lifting can help preserve strength and improve bone density as you age. The harder question is whether moving an enormous weight a few inches does more for longevity than a well-designed strength program. In this video, Tony Huge explores that idea through training with Sensei Don, grip-strength research, and the case for loading your skeleton.

What the video argues
Tony wants to stay strong enough to enjoy the years he gains. Training with Don gives that ambition a concrete example: Tony describes a 300 kg shrug through a short range of motion after a progressive warm-up. Don is an experienced lifter. This account describes a training session. Competition verification and a beginner’s starting load are separate questions.
The video makes three connected points. Bone responds to mechanical loading. Grip strength can reveal something about overall physical condition. And partial movements can let a trained lifter handle more external weight. The leap from those observations to “the best anti-aging exercise” remains a hypothesis.
Does heavy lifting improve bone density?
There is human trial evidence for supervised resistance and impact training. In the LIFTMOR trial, 101 postmenopausal women with low bone mass took part in an eight-month comparison. The supervised training group improved lumbar-spine bone mineral density by an average of 2.9%; the lower-intensity comparison group lost 1.2%. The participants were screened and closely supervised. Evidence also exists in men. The LIFTMOR-M study compared progressive resistance and impact training with machine-based isometric axial loading, alongside a nonrandomized control group. Several bone and physical-function outcomes favored resistance and impact training over the control condition. Its mixed design and specific participants matter when applying the findings. Those studies support taking strength training seriously. They do not establish that the heaviest possible partial rep is the safest or most effective choice for everyone, or that a bone-density improvement guarantees a longer life.
What grip strength tells us about longevity
The PURE study analyzed 139,691 adults. Each 5 kg reduction in grip strength was associated with a 16% higher relative hazard of death from any cause during follow-up. That was an observational association. It does not mean adding 5 kg to your grip reverses that risk by a matching amount. Read the PURE grip-strength study.
Tony makes this distinction in the recording: a stronger grip can reflect a stronger, more active person. Squeezing a gripper is not a demonstrated shortcut to extra years of life.
What about partial reps and OsteoStrong?
Tony discusses Tim Ferriss, John Jaquish, and OsteoStrong as influences on his interest in heavy loading through short movements. His enthusiasm is part of the video. The evidence deserves a separate check.
A 2025 scoping review found inconsistent bone-strength results and substantial limitations in the available OsteoStrong studies. The review also disclosed that two authors had consulted in legal claims involving the company. That disclosure belongs alongside its findings. Read the review and disclosures.
The 2026 BONEMORE randomized trial adds newer evidence. OsteoStrong met the study’s prespecified non-inferiority margin against dynamic multicomponent exercise, but the comparison program did not improve the primary bone material strength measure. Where to start
Start with a level of resistance you can control and a plan you can repeat. If you have osteoporosis, a fracture history, or pain with loading, have a qualified clinician and trainer adapt the program before attempting heavy work. The trial results apply to programs that included close supervision.
Keep the questions separate as you track progress: are you stronger, are you functioning better, and, where testing is appropriate, has bone density changed? A bigger number on the bar cannot answer all three.
