The thing about methylene blue is that nobody can decide whether it’s a vintage curiosity or the most underrated nootropic on the planet. It’s a 150-year-old dye that turns your urine bright blue, stains your tongue cobalt for hours, and somehow also enhances mitochondrial function, supports memory, and was the original treatment for malaria back when modern pharmacology didn’t exist yet.
I’ve been running methylene blue daily for almost three years. It lives in the morning kit on my counter in Pattaya, right next to the kettle and the BPC-157 bottle. This is what I actually do, why I do it, and what most online “methylene blue protocols” get hilariously wrong.
The Quick History You Need
Heinrich Caro synthesized methylene blue in 1876 as a textile dye. By the 1890s, Paul Ehrlich was using it to stain bacteria and discovered it could kill malaria parasites. It became the first synthetic drug ever used in human medicine. It’s still on the WHO essential medicines list — used for methemoglobinemia and as a surgical dye.
The biohacking world rediscovered it about a decade ago when researchers started publishing on its effects on cytochrome c oxidase — the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Methylene blue acts as an electron shuttle. It accepts electrons in one part of the chain and donates them downstream, effectively bypassing damaged or sluggish mitochondrial machinery.
That’s the whole pitch in one sentence: methylene blue lets your mitochondria keep producing ATP even when parts of the chain are compromised by age, oxidative stress, or just the daily grind of living.
What It Actually Does
Three core mechanisms with real research behind them:
1. Mitochondrial electron transport. Bypasses complex I/III dysfunction, supports ATP production, reduces reactive oxygen species. This is the core mechanism for the cognitive and energy effects.
2. Monoamine oxidase inhibition. At higher doses, methylene blue is a potent MAOI. This is why mixing it with SSRIs is dangerous — serotonin syndrome risk is real. At low doses (under 1 mg/kg) the MAOI effect is minimal but still relevant.
3. Nitric oxide synthase inhibition. Reduces excess NO, which can be useful in inflammatory states but is something to be aware of if you’re stacking with NO-boosting supplements.
There’s also data on memory enhancement (from rat studies and a few small human trials), neuroprotection in models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and antimicrobial activity — though I wouldn’t run methylene blue as your sepsis protocol.
My Actual Protocol
Daily dose: 0.5–1 mg per kilogram of bodyweight, taken in the morning. For me at 95 kg, that’s 50–95 mg. I usually run 70 mg.
Form: USP-grade or pharmaceutical-grade methylene blue, 1% aqueous solution. That’s 10 mg/mL. So 7 mL = 70 mg.
This part matters and most internet protocols ignore it. Industrial methylene blue and pharmaceutical methylene blue are different products. Industrial dye contains heavy metal contaminants — lead, arsenic, cadmium — at concentrations that are fine for staining cotton and toxic for daily ingestion. Get pharmaceutical USP-grade. Pay the extra $20.
Timing: Morning, with my first coffee. Drop into water — the blue color is intense, you can’t miss the dose. I’ll add a few drops of vitamin C to the water — sodium ascorbate or just lemon juice. The vitamin C reduces methylene blue to leucomethylene blue (the colorless reduced form), which absorbs better and tastes less metallic.
Stacking: I run methylene blue with red light therapy in the morning. The combination is more than additive — methylene blue absorbs in the red/near-infrared spectrum, and red light activates the methylene blue molecule directly in tissue. 10 minutes of red light therapy 30 minutes after dosing is the move.
Cycling: 5 days on, 2 days off. I keep weekends light to avoid any MAOI accumulation and to let receptor sensitivity reset.
What You’ll Notice
The first time you take methylene blue, the most dramatic effect is visual. Your urine turns electric blue inside an hour. Your saliva goes blue-green. If you take too much undiluted, your tongue stains — sometimes for a full day. This is harmless and is the most common reason guys stop taking it. They get tired of looking like they ate a smurf.
The cognitive effect is clearer focus. Less of a stimulant edge than caffeine — more of a steady, sustained mental energy. Working memory feels sharper. I notice it most during long writing or business sessions where I need to hold a lot in working memory.
Inflammation markers improve over time. My hs-CRP dropped from 1.2 to 0.6 over six months of daily methylene blue. Hard to attribute that to one variable, but the timing tracked.
Sleep doesn’t change in either direction at low doses. Energy stays elevated longer into the afternoon — not in a wired way, just no afternoon crash.
What It Stacks With
Methylene blue plays well with most of what I run:
- NAC: Both work on mitochondrial health from different angles. NAC rebuilds glutathione, methylene blue keeps the electron chain working. Run both daily.
- Red light therapy: Synergistic. Photobiomodulation activates methylene blue directly.
- Coffee/caffeine: Fine. Methylene blue is not a stimulant in the cardiovascular sense.
- Cognitive peptides: Semax and Selank stack cleanly with methylene blue. Different mechanisms, no overlap on MAOI risk.
- Senolytics: Fisetin at quarterly senolytic doses stacks fine with methylene blue.
What NOT To Stack It With
- SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs: Hard contraindication. Serotonin syndrome risk is real, especially at doses over 1 mg/kg. If you’re on antidepressants, do not run methylene blue. Period.
- Tramadol, MDMA, dextromethorphan: Same serotonergic risk. No.
- G6PD deficiency: If you have this enzyme deficiency, methylene blue can trigger hemolytic anemia. Check before starting.
- Pregnancy: Don’t.
- Massive doses with no reason: Above 5 mg/kg you flip the antioxidant effect into a pro-oxidant effect. More is not better.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Buying aquarium methylene blue. Pet store methylene blue contains stabilizers and fillers you don’t want in your bloodstream. Same for fabric dye. USP-grade only.
Mistake 2: Overdosing because the bottle dropper is small. A 1% solution is concentrated. 7 mL is 70 mg of active. Don’t measure in shots.
Mistake 3: Taking it at night. Even though it’s not technically stimulating, some people get extended energy for 6–8 hours after dosing. Stick to mornings.
Mistake 4: Stacking it with everything serotonergic without realizing it. St. John’s Wort, 5-HTP, tryptophan supplements, MDMA microdosing protocols — all of these become risky on methylene blue. Read your supplement labels.
Mistake 5: Expecting a stimulant. If you compare it to modafinil or amphetamines, you’ll be disappointed. The effect is subtler. It’s a baseline upgrade, not a one-day rocket fuel.
Why It Fits the Pattaya Lifestyle
Living in Thailand and running a content empire means odd hours, lots of travel between Bangkok and Pattaya, training in heat that wrecks your mitochondria, and the constant low-grade inflammation that comes with a warm tropical climate. Methylene blue doesn’t fix any of that on its own, but it’s a force multiplier for everything else I’m doing — TRT, peptides, training, sleep optimization.
It’s also one of the cheapest tools in the kit. A 30 mL bottle of pharmaceutical 1% methylene blue runs around $40 and lasts me four months. The cost per dose is under thirty cents. There aren’t many interventions with this kind of return on investment.
What the Future Looks Like
Methylene blue is starting to show up in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s, depression resistant to standard treatment, and post-COVID brain fog. Whether any of those become mainstream prescriptions is a separate question — pharma can’t easily monetize a 150-year-old generic compound. But the science is moving in the direction biohackers have been pointing for a decade.
For now, it stays in my daily stack alongside NAC, TUDCA, and the morning peptide rotation. Cheap, clinically validated, mechanistically sound. That’s a rare combination in this space.

If you’re chasing mitochondrial health, cognitive endurance, and a longevity-aligned daily protocol, methylene blue belongs on your shelf. Get the pharmaceutical grade. Stick to 0.5–1 mg/kg in the morning. Avoid the obvious drug interactions. Cycle 5 days on, 2 off. Pair with red light if you’re willing to spend the money on a panel.
And accept that your tongue is going to be blue sometimes. It’s worth it.
